Blending Horizontal Accords
Each essential oil, absolute, tincture or synthetic materials has it's own, very unique lifetime. A cool, minty material may last less than an hour on a scent strip, whereas sandalwood lasts for days, sometimes even a week or more!
The art of perfumery can be broken down into 2 basic skills. First of all you really must get to know each material very well. You gotta know what it smells like, how long it lasts and how powerful it is! Secondly, it's all about blending.
When we blend together perfume materials of similar lifetimes, this is called "horizontal belnding." For example if we blend 10 different top notes together, this is a "horizontal blend." If we blend 6 middle notes together, again, this is a horizontal blend. And if we blend 3 base notes with each other - horizontal blend.
Below is an example of some possibly horizontal blends.
